What is a Tooth Extraction?
An extraction involves fully removing one or more teeth from your child’s mouth. Extractions are a way to improve your child’s overall oral health and prevent future dental problems from happening. At all times, we work to make the extraction process as comfortable and easy for your child as possible. Extractions can be done under local or general anesthesia as needed.
Why might a Tooth Extraction be needed?
There are several reasons for needing to have extractions done. Children may need extractions prior to having orthodontic treatment. Some reasons for needing this procedure include:
• Your child has one or more baby teeth that aren’t falling out on their own
• A tooth has become severely damaged or decayed
• Your child has a problematic or impacted wisdom tooth
• Your child needs an extraction done prior to undergoing orthodontic treatment
Who is a candidate for a Tooth Extraction?
Most children can safely have an extraction performed with no ill effects. We will examine your child’s smile to determine if extractions are necessary. If possible, we try our best to preserve the natural teeth so that they will not have to be removed. If all other treatments have failed or if nothing can be done to save the tooth, we may recommend that it be fully removed via an extraction.
What happens during the Tooth Extraction process?
The extraction process begins with anesthetic or sedation. We offer many sedative options to make your child’s experience in our office more comfortable. The next step is to loosen and remove the teeth using special dental instruments. We may need to place sutures in order to close the gums so that they can heal properly. We then have your child bite down on cotton or gauze to stop all bleeding. You will be given important post-operative care instructions so that the area can heal properly with minimal to no complications or problems.
